Investing smartly is not an easy task. Most investors will say
that the key to success in the market is solid research and a bit of luck.
There is not much we can offer in terms of luck, but there are
a some great research tools of value to the investor. One of these tools is
the stock message board. Once you have done preliminary research
on a company (i.e analyst reports, public filings, news releases, etc...) and
are still not sure whether to invest, go to the Boards. In this informal and
non-scientific study we looked at approximately 15 Message Boards for utility,
ease of use and affordability. In the end, we can only really suggest visiting
three. Unfortunately, there are no diamonds in the rough when it comes to Message
Boards. If its obscure and hard to find, it means that it is not heavily trafficked
and is subsequently of limited use.
- YAHOO FINANCE (http://quote.yahoo.com/):
- Select "Message Boards" under the heading "Features."
Under the heading "Message Boards" select "stocks." On
the "Stocks" page type in the ticker or full name of the company
in which you are interested. The search results will usually return two headings
referring to "Board Matches" and "Message Matches." Select
"Board Matches" and you will go to the first message on the board.
The rest is self-explanatory. Anyone can read messages. To post you will have
to register with Yahoo, but this process is relatively non-intrusive and is
free. Yahoo threads are usually sophisticated and heavily used, giving readers
a lot to think about. Yahoo Finance also offers other tools for investors
that can be explored at the home page. Overall, Yahoo sponsors one of EndFraud's
favorite message boards.
- SILICON INVESTOR (http://www.techstocks.com/):
- This is our other favorite message board. It's very easy to use and the
only reason its listed second, is because it costs $125 to post. Reading messages
are free. Go to the site and simply type in the company name or ticker in
the search box. SI usually returns one match which is the message board. Click
on the match and you will be at the first message with a list of recently
filed messages. Navigation is simple and self-explanatory. SI also offers
its users various research tools. [P.S. SI is offering a 30 day free trial
offer]
- MOTLEY FOOL (http://boards.fool.com/Folders.asp):
- Navigation is fairly easy. If you select a stock by alphabetical folder
you can either page through the folder until you get to the stock or simply
enter the ticker symbol in the search box and it will hyperlink you to the
right folder. As with the other boards, any user can read but only registered
users can post. Registration is free. The Motley Fool board is generally as
comprehensive (lists a wide variety of stocks) as Yahoo and SI but we find
the content (messages) weaker. Motley Fool also has a number of other useful
tools for investors.

Many instances of securities fraud go undetected. Most investors
will not even consider the possibility of misconduct until they are faced with
the loss of their investment. Because the market naturally fluctuates, not every
loss is indicative of fraud but it should cause concern and serve as the impetus
for further investigation.
